We believe the journey of being a member of the wrestling team will leave each individual better for their efforts. They will learn confidence in facing their opponents and as they strive to excel in the sport and learn qualities that will make them successful and happy as they go forward in their adult lives.
The wrestling team will help each wrestler define goals for themselves and their team. They will then check progress as they move forward. Common goals are to become better athletes, to make the starting line-up, or to win a competition at the highest levels. Wrestling provides individuals more control of their progress than most other sports and learns as they see the results of the level of effort they make.
Resiliency is required from every wrestler as they bounce back from setbacks to their goal. Losing is very personal in individual sports, probably none more so than wrestling, but every wrestler will experience a loss and learn how to respond. The team will emphasize for individuals to have the “never quit” attitude, whether it’s when they are trying to save team points by not getting pinned or bouncing back from injuries or match losses that occur in the season.
Wrestlers learn responsibility. They must be responsible for themselves and their teammates to work hard, make weight and attend practices. They learn they hurt their work-out partner and teammates when they don’t make practice. They must balance their schedule to complete studies, train, compete and participate in normal teenage social events.
Discipline is required of wrestlers – wrestlers will be asked to do the right thing at the right time and will see the results of their actions. No other sport requires the individual to be aware of the implications of their actions as wrestling.
St. Mary’s will emphasize that wrestling is a privilege. It is a blessing to have the physical and mental capacity to participate on a wrestling team. They have an opportunity to build friendships, have fun with peers all the while pursuing their goals.
Athletics, and wrestling specifically, provide opportunities for participants to learn lessons that can last a lifetime. We believe the wrestlers will leave the program with qualities that will make them better people as they progress through their life’s journey.
